Minister says pharmacy professionals are at the heart of health and care transformation at RCPharm’s Welsh conference
Pharmacy teams are playing a central role in improving access to care, preventing illness and helping build a more sustainable NHS, the Cabinet Minister for Health and Care told the Royal College of Pharmacy's (RCPharm) annual Welsh conference in Cardiff today. In a keynote message to delegates, Mr Mabon ap Gwynfor praised the vital contribution of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to patient care, describing pharmacy as being "at the heart" of the Welsh Government's priorities to deliver improvement for health and care. The Minister highlighted pharmacy’s growing role in improving access to care, supporting prevention, tackling inequalities and strengthening services closer to home. "Few professions are as closely aligned to this government's ambitions for health and care as pharmacy”, he said. His speech recognised the increasingly clinical role pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are playing across community pharmacy, general practice and hospital services, including the growing impact of pharmacist prescribers in helping people access care more quickly and closer to home. He described pharmacy as one of the most accessible clinical services available to people across Wales. “For many people, their local pharmacy is the front door to healthcare. It is local, it is trusted and increasingly, it provides clinical services that help people receive care closer to home.” The Minister praised pharmacy's contribution to Wales' prevention agenda and improving cancer outcomes, talking about the role of pharmacy teams in public health interventions, treatment support and helping patients throughout their care journey. He said: “As we continue to develop our preventative health agenda, I believe there is significant opportunity to build even further on that contribution.” (Source: Senedd Commission / Comisiwn y Senedd) RCPharm’s Pharmacy: Delivering a Healthier Wales 2026 conference brings together pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from across Wales to share best practice and discuss progress towards improving health outcomes for patients via the vision for pharmacy in Wales to 2030. Geraldine McCaffrey, Director for Wales at the Royal College of Pharmacy said: “Today’s speech was a powerful endorsement of the vital role pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and wider pharmacy teams play in delivering care for people across Wales. It is encouraging to hear the Welsh government recognises both the contribution pharmacy teams make and the impact they have in improving access to care, supporting prevention and helping people stay healthier for longer. “Across community pharmacy, general practice and hospitals, pharmacy teams are taking on increasingly clinical roles, helping patients get expert care closer to home when they need it. It’s clear that pharmacy is closely aligned to the priorities of the government and to the needs of patients in Wales. Pharmacy teams, as part of wider multidisciplinary teams, will be central to further realising ambitions to improve health and care. “We look forward to working with the government and partners across the NHS to build on this progress, develop consistent pharmacy services in every part of Wales and ensure the workforce, infrastructure and investment are in place to deliver lasting benefits for patients and communities.” Nearly 200 delegates and exhibitors attended the conference at The Parkgate Hotel in Cardiff. Royal College of Pharmacy meets Members of the Senedd
Last week, the Royal College of Pharmacy Wales team met with new Members of Senedd (MSs). With around 70% of Members newly elected to the Senedd, it was an important opportunity to introduce the College and highlight the clinical role, expertise and contribution of pharmacists across Wales. The team spoke to MSs about the contribution pharmacists across all sectors can make to the new Welsh Government’s health priorities. This included: Tackling waste to improve financial and environmental sustainability. Supporting patients with long-term conditions. Enabling care closer to home. Supporting prevention by helping people stay well and reducing medicines-related harm and hospital admissions. Source: Edie Boulcott, Camlas We also discussed the Welsh Government’s proposals for a new cancer plan and the introduction of up to ten new surgical hubs, emphasising the important role pharmacists can play in both areas. The team also emphasised that pharmacy teams need appropriate funding, resources and capacity to make full use of their expertise, improve patient care and help the NHS make best use of its resources. Liz Hallett, Chair of the Royal College of Pharmacy's Welsh Pharmacy Advisory Council, said: “It was valuable to meet new and returning MSs so early in the Senedd term. With so many new Members, it is important they understand the profession’s role across community pharmacy, general practice, hospitals and other healthcare settings.” Geraldine McCaffrey, Director for Wales at the Royal College of Pharmacy, added: “Pharmacists’ medicines expertise will be crucial to delivering the Welsh Government’s health priorities. Over the coming months, we’ll continue working with Members of the Senedd through one-to-one meetings, visits with pharmacy teams and responses to government consultations, ensuring pharmacists’ expertise and role in patient care are reflected as these plans are developed and implemented.” Find out more about our work in Wales. New three-year goals launched to advance pharmacy services in Wales
This news story was published when the organisation was the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. New goals to transform pharmacy services across Wales over the next three years have been launched today, setting out the next steps in 'Pharmacy: Delivering a Healthier Wales', the long-term 2030 vision for maximising the expertise of pharmacy teams to improve patient care. Since the vision was first published in 2019, pharmacy teams have made remarkable progress despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. With investment and workforce development, patients now benefit from more clinical services closer to home, while the rollout of electronic prescribing is underway across all settings. The 2025–2028 goals build on this progress and were shaped through engagement with more than 500 pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, support staff, students, patient representatives and healthcare partners. They focus on spreading and scaling services to ensure equitable access to care, wherever people live and however they access them. Priorities include embedding prevention and wellbeing, delivering electronic prescribing across Wales, and transforming aseptic services, starting with a new radiopharmacy facility in South East Wales. Other aims include increasing patient access to pharmacist independent prescribers, expanding the skill mix of pharmacy teams, and creating innovative career pathways that support multi-disciplinary care. Elen Jones, RPS Director for Wales, said: "This is an exciting moment for pharmacy as we begin another three-year commitment to transformation. The 2025–2028 goals take us closer to our 2030 vision, while recognising the pressures the workforce continues to face. Thanks to the passion and dedication of pharmacy teams across Wales, I am confident we are on track. "Progress has only been possible through the collective efforts of pharmacy teams and our partners. The PDaHW programme delivery board, supported by four themed subgroups, has driven momentum and kept goals in sharp focus. Their diverse membership has ensured our work reflects the needs of patients and the whole pharmacy workforce. "When barriers arise, these are escalated to the Welsh Pharmaceutical Committee, whose oversight ensures challenges are addressed and the voice of pharmacy is heard. I would also like to thank the RPS team for leading the development of this update, which captures the energy and commitment of colleagues right across Wales.” Read the new goals in Welsh.
