Professional support update

Top support questions, week ending 7th August ▼

We regularly receive legal and ethical enquiries including:

  • Can a community pharmacist prescribe and dispense medication for the same person? What processes should be in place if this is being considered?
  • If a prescription states a patient’s first name or initials, does this meet the legal requirements of a prescription?
  • Can a pharmacist independent prescriber prescribe Sativex after it has been initiated by a specialist doctor?

For questions relating to prescription legality and controlled drugs, we have resources which can help, such as the MEP. However, for further support and advice, please contact the support team.

Pharmacy practice questions

We have also received some enquiries about pharmacy practice such as:

  • Can a GP refer a child to the NHS England Hypertension Case-Finding Service?
  • Can I be a superintendent pharmacist for more than one pharmacy at the same time?
  • Can senna tablets be crushed prior to administration?
  • What are the training requirements for pharmacists administering flu vaccines in GP practice?

Our RCPharm pharmacy guides provide professional help, best practice guidance, and advice for every sector of practice.

Newly qualfied pharmacist enquiries

We have recently received several enquiries from newly qualified pharmacists, for example:

  • How can I get an NHS England smartcard when working as a locum?
  • Where can I find resources to help me write my revalidation entries?
  • What should I consider when deciding whether to accept a new job?
  • What resources are available to help me continue to develop my practice as a newly qualified pharmacist?

We have many resources which can support newly qualified pharmacists including:
