Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month 2024

Did you catch our celebrations for South Asian Heritage Month, which explores the history and identity of British South Asians? We collaborated with Female Pharmacy Leaders Network, Pharmacy Technicians of Colour, APTUK, British Pharmaceutical Students' Association and The Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists to create some fabulous pharmacy highlights for you to enjoy. We hosted our Free to Be Me event in our London office where we came together to explore the intersection of South Asian traditional medicine and Western medicine and how they complement each other. (RCPharm) We explored Ayurvedic medicines at the RPS Museum. The 19th century botanic print on the right shows Haridra (turmeric), known for treating skin, digestive, and upper respiratory issues. We have been celebrating SAHM for a couple of years; take a look at last year’s South Asian star nominations, where you nominated South Asian individuals who have positively impacted the industry. Mark Drakeford MS appointed Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
Wales’s new First Minister, Eluned Morgan, has appointed Mark Drakeford MS to Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. Commenting on the announcement Elen Jones, director of Wales at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: “I would like to congratulate Mark Drakeford on his appointment. In his previous roles as First Minister and his first period as Minister for Health and Social Services, Mark was a firm supporter of pharmacy and we were pleased to have a constructive relationship with him. "During this time, he was instrumental in advancing the clinical role of the profession in Wales; particularly in the development of cluster pharmacist roles and enabling community pharmacists to take the lead on the treatment of common ailments. "We look forward to working with him once more to ensure that pharmacists are fully supported to provide the same high-quality, patient-centred care that enables the public to benefit from their medicines’ expertise." A pharmacy initiative in NHS Lothian has resulted in a 300% increase in the number of inhalers being returned to community pharmacies for sustainable disposal.

Continuing violence and its impact on pharmacy

RPS is an anti-racist organisation and we stand with the pharmacy community against all forms of racism, religious hatred and intolerance. The violent disorder that has been perpetrated across cities and towns over the past week has horrified all of us and is totally abhorrent. We recognise this is a frightening time for many in the profession and wider pharmacy family. Pharmacy is proud of its diversity; our strength lies in unity, and we stand together in condemning all who carry out and are responsible for acts of religious and ethnic hatred including those fuelled by Islamophobia and xenophobia. There must be zero tolerance for any abuse, intimidation, or violence towards pharmacy staff, and any incidents should be reported to the police to help them understand what’s happening locally. The safety of pharmacy teams is paramount, and it is essential that the NHS, employers, and owners communicate this clearly and provide support. RPS members can contact our support service who will provide 1-1 advice and assistance and there are a range of useful online resources provided by RPS. More widely, we have a bank of guides on tackling microaggressions which can be used to improve workplace culture and tools to help tackle race inequality at work. Other useful resources are listed by the General Pharmaceutical Council at the end of their statement on the violent disorder.
