Introduction of new NHS vaccine programmes

Against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) England.

Published: 26 June 2024

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS England have published a letter which sets out the details of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination programmes. Following guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), the letter set out next steps for delivery of two new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination programmes from 1 September 2024, for older adults and during pregnancy for infant protection.

  • Programme for older adults: All adults aged 75 on or after 1 September 2024 will be eligible for the vaccine as well as a catch-up campaign for those already aged 75-79. This will be delivered via GP practices
  • Programme for pregnant people to protect infants: All those that are at least 28 weeks pregnant will be eligible for the vaccine. This will be delivered via maternity services and via GP practices opportunistically or on request.

In addition, NHS England (NHSE) will be commissioning a number of community pharmacies to deliver the programme for older adults. Further details will be shared in due course.

Further information can be found in the full letter.
