
Amira Guirguis
Amira is an accomplished pharmacist independent prescriber with a proven track record across research, academia, public health, and policy development. Her core expertise lies in substance misuse and new psychoactive substances, where she brings a distinctive combination of hands-on experience in drug detection, addiction prescribing, and policy formulation. She serves on the UK Government’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland’s Accreditation Panel. Additionally, she acts as an expert witness in court, providing robust scientific evidence to inform sentencing decisions.
Amira played a pivotal role in establishing a new school of pharmacy in Wales, shaping the future of pharmacy education and cultivating leadership among emerging healthcare professionals. As a supervisor of PhD researchers and professional doctorates, she continues to drive academic excellence and research innovation. Her scholarly contributions include co-authoring over 100 publications, spanning peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and drug monographs.
In 2025, Amira was appointed chief scientist at the Royal College of Pharmacy. Her research interests bridge clinical pharmacy, pharmacovigilance, netnography, and analytical chemistry, underpinned by a strong commitment to embedding rigorous science at the heart of everyday pharmacy practice, and building the research capacity of pharmacy teams to undertake evidence-based inquiry within their routine roles.
